Biography[ edit ] Reinecke was born in what is today the Hamburg, Germany province of Altona ; technically he was born a Dane, as until the town was under Danish rule. He received all his musical instruction from his father, Johann Peter Rudolf Reinecke 22 November — 14 August , a music teacher and writer on musical subjects. At the age of 19, he undertook his first concert tour as a pianist [1] in , through Denmark and Sweden , after which he lived for a long time in Leipzig , [1] where he studied under Felix Mendelssohn , Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt ; he entered into friendly relations with the former two. There he remained until , when he resigned and went to Paris. In ensuing years he was appointed musical director at the German metropolis of Barmen , and became the academic, musical director and conductor of the Singakademie at Breslau. In , Reinecke was appointed director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra concerts in Leipzig, and professor of composition and piano at the Conservatorium.

Carl began to compose at the age of 7, and his first public appearance as a pianist was when he was 11 or 12 years old. As a youth Carl Reinecke was a first-rate orchestral violin-player. At 18 he made a concert tour through Sweden and Denmark, with especial success at Copenhagen. In he settled in Leipzig , where he studied diligently, and eagerly embraced the opportunities for cultivation afforded by the society of Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann , with a success which amply shows itself in his music.
