LOBBY HERO KENNETH LONERGAN PDF

The aching compassion for humanity in that Oscar winner is second nature to Kenneth Lonergan, going back at least to , when Playwrights Horizons commissioned this bittersweet, people-friendly play. Set in the lobby of a generic Manhattan apartment building, the play looks both kindly and critically upon the kind of characters Lonergan loves to write: working-class stiffs, generally decent people who are unexpectedly challenged by issues of ethics. Jeff Michael Cera , a perfect Mr. Sensitive is the night security guard — and absolutely not, as we are frequently reminded, the doorman. That would be William Brian Tyree Henry, made for this role , the senior security guard, who likes Jeff, but despairs of his ever manning up and keeps giving him self-help books to motivate him and improve his mind.

But Lobby Hero is no gimmick event, its no-weak-link casting anything but a stunt — strong enough, in fact, to merit serious Tony consideration. Related Story Shubert Foundation Appoints Board Member Diana Phillips As President At once intimate and encompassing, Lobby Hero, directed by Trip Cullman, takes no prisoners in its parsing of loyalty and betrayal, ambition and ethics, with detours into sexual harassment, police brutality and the awkward, nervous stirrings of what might be the grace of a new love.

Scared yet? Joan Marcus Set entirely in or just outside the entryway of a Manhattan apartment building, the play follows a quartet of New Yorkers whose lives criss-cross in that most transitional of places — a lobby.

Cera plays Jeff, a year-old, wee-hours security guard trying to pull his life together after getting kicked out of the Navy for smoking pot. And he owes it all to William, the suffer-no-fools supervisor who took a chance on the kid, though he questions the decision with every wiseacre crack the seemingly unserious Jeff is incapable of holding back. Despite their disparate backgrounds — William is a black man from the inner city streets, Jeff a suburban, white Army brat — the two have bonded over their late-night confidences.

Into their lobby swaggers beat cop Bill Evans, sporting a bushy mustache that says it all and his admiring young partner in crime-fighting Dawn Powley. Moments like those pass smoothly though, with Cera adding a degree or two of shrewdness to his now trademark awkwardness. But Evans is the revelation here. The company chose its arrival wisely. ‘Lobby Hero’ Review: Chris Evans, Michael Cera Take No Prisoners In Lonergan Drama

Shelves: , plays , popsugar19 I did not think I was going to like this. Knowing he played the role of Jeff going into reading made it impossible for me not to picture him talking. That being said I actually found it quite good and the unfortunate casting fits as Jeff is what I would expect from a Michael Cera character. Jeff works as a security guard. Throughout the play he titters I did not think I was going to like this. Throughout the play he titters back and forth with a questionable moral compass about things going on around him. None of the situations actually involve him but he forces himself in and causes chaos.
